Afni, Inc. tried to accuse me of failing to pay a Cingular cell phone bill from 2000-2001. Knowing that I would not have knowingly let an account go unpaid, I did a little research. I purchased a credit report, which did not show me as owing Cingular or any collection agency for a phone bill. Afni, Inc. is ripping people off by sending these false settlement offers. Can you imagine all the elderly people that are falling for this scam? I will be forwarding this information to the Better Business Bureau so that other people will be informed of these *** posing as debt collectors.

Dear "Shocked",

Your spelling alone would seem to indicate who is "ridiculously stupid". However, if you had bothered doing any research work, you would find that AFNI is under serious investigations by the BBB as well as the Illinois Attorney General. Consequently, the complaints here are quite valid and people like you would be the best next victim for AFNI because, clearly, you believe their scam is the gospel.

Regards,

Ridiculously Cautious

"shocked" must be an AFNI employee attempting damage control. Who else would claim that "All debt purchased by and collected by AFNI is valid." They have over a thousand complaints to BBB, and over 800 to the Illinois Attorney General, who is investigating them. They have hundreds of complaints on other sites, mostly by consumers claiming they are being billed for accounts they never opened, often in cities and states they never lived in.

When an original creditor sells a debt, it does not mean they no longer have any of their original records. Debt collectors are required to comply with FDCPA, which states that they will cease all collection activity whenever a consumer requests validation of an alleged debt within 30 days of receiving their initial letter. Based on both FTC opinion letters, and on many court cases, that validation must be obtained from the original creditor by the debt collector, and must then be forwarded to the consumer before any collection activity can legally resume.

If the original creditor actually no longer has any record of sold accounts, then AFNI would not be able to provide any legitimate validation in response to consumer FDCPA requests, and any letter they did send saying the debt was valid would be deceptive if they hadn't confirmed their information with the original creditor.

You guys are ridiculously stupid if you think AFNI is scamming you. It is a collections agency who buys old debt from other companies, and as far as this last poster, if the debt was 6 years old, the client being Verizon would have sold it and had no record of the debt. There for not pulling it up in their system when you called them. You are an idiot. Have fun waisting your time and money getting a lawyer, and calling who ever in gods name. All debt purchased by and collected by AFNI is valid.

Thanks.

I received a letter today From AFNI stating that I owe 96.68 and I could settle the account by paying half to this company. I can only say, if you accept 48 dollars for a 500.00 bill you would be as crazy as I would If I sent you the 48 bucks. Will someone lock these crooks up

CASE ID: 19010273

On March 13, 2008, you provided the following information:

(The consumer indicated he/she DID NOT accept the response from the business.)

I do not accept the response from AFNI, INC.

A company called AFNI, Inc. P.O. Box 3472 in Bloomington, Il. 61702 is a third party collections company.

They buy old worthless, incorrect and often out of statute of limitations debt portfolios.

Recently, ANFI, Inc. sent out a second notice collection bill on an old phone account through Verizon California Inc. they said I owed in 2001. Note I never received a first notice.

It struck me funny that they reaged the debt to 2005, which is against the law also.

They offered to settle for half of what they said I owed.

Dumbfounded I knew I never had any account of any kind with Verizon, so I called Verizon Cal. Inc. on Feb. 26, 2008, and spoke to Eric. He looked in his data base for my name, SS# and the phone number. He said there was nothing about me in any of their files. He also said the phone number wasn't even a Verizon number.

So I did a phone number search at my own expense and found out what I already Knew, it was not mine.

I checked my credit reports and found in violation of the Fair Debt Reporting Act they also placed this bill on my consumer’s credit reports without ever notifying me and reaged it.

I checked other web sites and found out a lot about AFNI, Inc. scamming people, not just a few but hundreds.

I then disputed the bill by C.L.with return recipts. Also I filed with my state’s Attorney General and the IL. A.G., the FTC, and the BBB. The IL. BBB says that AFNI, INC. says it is my bill from 2001, but they have not validated it to me per my letters as required by law. Even if it were mine, it is out of SOL in California as it is over 6 years old, and not mine. I am not sending them one red cent and will sue them if they continue to report this on my CR or sell this worthless paper to another debt agency.

I have heard to NEVER, NEVER call AFNI, Inc., as they will capture your phone number and start calling and harassing you; AND NEVER give them your Information as they will use anything against you.

I am contacting the media to add my story to hundreds of others that AFNI, Inc. is trying to scam.

For More Information on the AFNI, Inc. scam check BudHibbs.com or simply type in consumer complaints AFNI, Inc. into your search the web box. There are hundreds of complaints against these scam artists.
